Summer Cocktail & A Fresh Start {+Giveaway}

There’s something about lemons that just screams summer. It might have something to do with their bright yellow color, or the strong zing that hits you in the nose when you grate some  zest off.  Or is it the color of lemon juice, so light, fresh and pale? It makes you feel relaxed and cool just by looking at it. And that sharp and tangy taste that makes every single muscle in your face twitch and your eyes squint as if you’re looking towards the sun… Priceless!

So, whenever I need a pick me up, I turn to lemons. And since I’m a real color freak (don’t ask), I like to add some lavender to it as well. Not only does it look very pretty and calming, but the fragrant lavender buds add a lovely sweetness and mellow down the sharpness of  the lemons. And if you have some gin lying around, even better. I say go for it.

When life gives you lemons skip the lemonade part and make yourself a proper drink.  You’ll be ready for a fresh start in no time. Just trust me on this.

Speaking of fresh starts… This post actually marks a fresh start in my blogging career. Convenient, ha? This is indeed my first official public post on BakeNoir.com.

You may have already stumbled upon my recipes on a Croatian blog called Sweet Sensation. I’ve been happily blogging there for the past 4 years, but as of recently I’ve been feeling a strong urge to take another step forward and share the love with the rest of the world.  So, here I am! I’ll spare you the boring details, but if you’re interested you can read about it on my About page.

I can’t even begin to tell you how excited I am to finally launch BakeNoir.com! This time I had given everything a lot of thought and effort, from the blog title and tagline, through design and visual identity to a bunch of other great features and tools. Please, visit my About page to read about getting around this site and using various useful tools, such as Pouch or the kitchen conversions chart.  Of course, I couldn’t have done it all without a huge help from my brilliant and extremely patient husband Darko.

And now for the fun part. To celebrate the launch of BakeNoir.com, I’m giving away two gorgeous handmade jewelry pieces – a necklace and a brooch. The jewelry was custom made  by a young and talented Croatian artist Petra Žabčić to match the design and visual identity of BakeNoir.com. Lemon Lavender Cocktail

This fabulous summer cocktail is adapted from Saveur.com. I tweaked the amounts just slightly. For this cocktail, you’ll first have to make a simple lavender syrup. The recipe is included and it yields approximately 200ml of syrup. This is enough for 5 drinks. If you have leftovers, keep it in the refrigerator and use to flavor other drinks or desserts.
Lemon Lavender Cocktail
Ingredients
60ml gin
40ml lemon juice
40ml lavender syrup (recipe follows)
splash of club soda
some ice
one lemon slice, for garnish
Directions
Pour gin, lemon juice and lavender syrup into a glass and stir. Top with club soda, add some ice and garnish with a lemon slice.
For the lavender syrup:
Ingredients
200ml water
200ml sugar
1 tablespoon dried lavender buds
Directions
Combine sugar and water in a small saucepan. Add lavender and cook on low heat until sugar is dissolved. Bring to a boil and cook for 2-3 minutes, just until it starts to thicken a bit. Then set to the side to cool. Strain out the lavender and refrigerate. Yields 200ml of syrup.
